Who you are agreeing with

These terms are the agreement between you and Social Signal Scanner, run by an individual in the Netherlands, for your use of the app at socialsignalscanner.com. For anything about them, write to support@socialsignalscanner.com.

By using the app you agree to these terms. If you subscribe you will be asked to accept them explicitly first, because a subscription is a contract in a way that reading a page is not. How your data is handled is a separate document, the privacy policy, which is not an agreement but a description.

What the app is, and what it is not

Social Signal Scanner takes the official data export that Instagram gives you about your own account, or lists you paste in yourself, and turns each upload into a dated snapshot. Comparing snapshots is what produces the numbers: who unfollowed you, who is new, who does not follow back.

• It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Instagram or Meta. Those names are used only to describe what the app reads.
• It never connects to Instagram. There is no login, no API call and no scraping. Nothing you do here touches your Instagram account, and the app will never ask for your Instagram password. Anything that does is not this app.
• It only knows what you give it. The app cannot see anything that is not in a snapshot you uploaded.

Your account

An account is an email address and nothing else. There is no password: you sign in with a link and a code sent to that address, so whoever can read that inbox can reach your account. Keep it secure, and tell us if you think someone else has got in.

An account is for one person. You must be 18 or older to create one.

What you upload

You keep every right you already have in what you upload; nothing here claims ownership of it. In return you confirm that you are entitled to upload it, which in practice means it is your own export or your own lists rather than someone else's.

Follower lists name other people, and you are the one who decided to put them here. Use what the app tells you for your own purposes and not to harass anybody. If a person asks to be removed from what is stored, write to support and it will be dealt with.

The plans

• On your device, free. The app works without an account and without payment. Snapshots kept only in your browser are never counted or limited, because they never reach the server.
• Free account. Signing in backs up your snapshots so they survive a lost device and appear on another one. A free account backs up 8 snapshots. Newer ones stay on the device you made them on.
• Subscribed. Unlimited snapshots, backed up and synced across all your devices.

Reaching the limit never deletes anything. It only means a new snapshot is not uploaded until you remove one that was, or subscribe.

Price, VAT and renewal

• Monthly: €2.98 or $2.98, charged every month.
• Yearly: €17.88 or $17.88, charged once a year, which is half the monthly price over twelve months.

Prices shown are what you pay: VAT is included. A subscription renews automatically at the same interval until you cancel it, and you will be charged on each renewal date using the payment method you gave.

Payments are handled by Stripe, which processes the card details; Social Signal Scanner never sees or stores them. Social Signal Scanner is the seller.

Prices can change, and a change only ever applies from your next renewal, not in the middle of a period you have paid for. You will be told before it takes effect, and you can cancel instead.

The free trial on the yearly plan

The yearly plan starts with 14 days free. You get everything a subscription gets during those days. Cancel before the 14 days are up and you are not charged at all. If you do not cancel, the first year is charged when the trial ends and the subscription runs from there.

The trial is one per person, not one per subscription.

Changing your mind

As a consumer in the EU you have 14 days to withdraw from a contract made online, and that right applies here. In practice: write to support within 14 days of being charged and you get the whole payment back, whether or not you used the app in the meantime. That is deliberately simpler and more generous than the law requires, so that nobody has to work out what they are owed.

After those 14 days a payment is not refunded, but you can cancel so you are not charged again.

Cancelling

You can cancel whenever you like. A cancelled subscription keeps working until the end of the period you have already paid for, and then stops renewing. You do not need to give a reason and nobody will try to talk you out of it.

What happens when a subscription ends

This is the part worth reading twice, because it is the opposite of what most services do. Nothing is deleted. When a subscription ends:

• Everything already backed up stays in your account and stays readable, downloadable and exportable.
• Your account simply goes back to the free allowance for new uploads.
• If it holds more than a free account's allowance, it keeps all of them. It just cannot add more until there is room.
• Everything on your own device is untouched, and always was: it is yours, and it is never subject to any limit.

A subscription ending is never a reason for anything of yours to be erased.

Keeping your own copy

Save backup in the app writes your whole history to a file at any time, on any plan, free or paid. Please use it. Backups here are a convenience and a second copy, not a guarantee: no service should be the only place something of yours exists.

What you may not do

• Upload somebody else's data export, or data you have no right to.
• Use the app to harass, stalk or profile other people.
• Attack the service: overload it, break into other accounts, or try to read data that is not yours.
• Resell access, or run it as a service for other people.
• Use it to build a competing product from the data other people put in.

Working around the limits on a free account does not get you anything worth having, and it is not what this list is about. The backup lives on the server, so editing what runs in your own browser cannot create one.

Availability

The app is offered as it is, with no promise of a particular uptime. It can be changed, and features can be added or removed. If something people rely on is going to be withdrawn, or the service is going to shut down, you will be told in advance and given time to export everything, and any subscription still running will be refunded for the part not used.

Accuracy, and what the app cannot know

The app reports what it can work out from the snapshots you gave it, and that is a real limit rather than a disclaimer. Instagram does not record when somebody unfollowed you; that fact exists only as the difference between two of your snapshots. So the further apart your snapshots are, the less the app can tell you, and anything that happened between two uploads and reversed itself is invisible.

Suspicion scores and follower waves are estimates from the shape of a username and the timing of follows. They are guesses, they can be wrong in both directions, and they are not a judgement about any real person or account. Do not treat them as one.

Liability

Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited under Dutch law. Your rights as a consumer are unaffected by this section.

Beyond that, and to the extent the law allows: the app is provided without warranties, and liability for any claim connected with it is limited to the amount you paid in the twelve months before it arose. If you never paid anything, that amount is nothing, which is also what the app costs.

Ending your account

You can delete your account from inside the app at any time, and that erases everything stored under it immediately. The privacy policy says exactly what is erased and what is left alone.

An account can be suspended or closed for a serious or repeated breach of the section above, and in that case any unused part of a subscription is refunded. You will be told why.

Changes to these terms

These terms can change. Anything that materially affects you will be notified by email to the address on your account before it takes effect, and for a subscriber it applies from the next renewal, so you can cancel instead of accepting it. Small corrections take effect when the date below changes.

Law and disputes

Dutch law applies, and disputes go to the courts of the Netherlands. If you are a consumer living elsewhere in the EU, this does not take away the protection of the mandatory consumer law of the country you live in, and you may bring a claim in your own country's courts.

Before any of that, write to support. Most things are a misunderstanding and are fixed in a day.
